A senior Iranian lawmaker says the recent capture of US Navy troops for trespassing indicated that the security of the Persian Gulf is under the control of the Islamic Republic.
MP Alaeddin Boroujerdi made the remarks in a Thursday message to Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi, the commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy.
The measure taken by "brave" members of the IRGC Navy in the Persian Gulf “showed that maintaining the security of the sensitive region is at the hands of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Boroujerdi said.
It showed even the US cannot break the rules of the game, said the lawmaker, who is also the chairman of the Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee.
On Wednesday, Fadavi said 10 US Navy troops had been arrested aboard two patrol boats after reaching three miles into the waters surrounding the Farsi Island in the Persian Gulf a day earlier.
The IRGC released them after deciding their intrusion was not deliberate. Fadavi said the trespassing occurred because of technical problems with the navigation systems of the US vessels.
Referring to the IRGC’s “Islamic” treatment of the detained US forces, Boroujerdi noted that the behavior was a reflection of the real Islam and a lesson for the whole world.
The clear message of the IRGC move to the regional countries was that the Islamic Republic of Iran has a sense of responsibility toward the security of this region, the official said, warning against any "miscalculations" in the strategic area.
